Forty-two of St. Matthew members were in attendance at the Sexual Harassment Conference held Saturday morning, November 21st @ 9:30 AM at the seat of the District Meeting--Johnson's Chapel AME Church, Mebane, NC.
We arrived about 9:30 AM ( Barbara Cooper, Barbara Yarbro, Paulette Simmons, Mary Elois Moragne) after having eaten breakfast at a nearby McDonald's. That was tooooo late to get a decent parking spot, so I had to park on the side of the road. My sympathy is for those cars trying to get out of their spaces around the church. The cars were everywhere, in all positions, and in every conceivable spot. That meant to us that a lot of people were inside. Yes indeed! It was a Standing Room Only situation. Chairs were placed in the aisle for late-comers like us.
We registered before entering the sanctuary where we saw a lot of St. Matthew friends......and hundreds of others from other churches.
We were reminded that even tho we all worship in " the house of the lord" , that doesn't mean that we are free of different kinds of harassments from differing people who hold differing positions in the church. No longer is it always safe inside our churches. The presenter made us aware of many instances where people had come to court.
Those of us who work with children were reminded to keep our eyes open for signs of possible problems that may affect our children. Send children on errands in pairs. Let children go to the bathrooms....in pairs.
After 105 minutes of looking at the powerpoint presentations, the floor was open up to questions. I left at that point to get my car out of the ditch on the side of the room.
As parents, you need to remind your children to report any and all instances of possible sexual harassment---they should keep their eyes open as well.
