STUDENT RECOGNITION SUNDAY
June 20, 2010
A Commission on Christian Education Activity

On Sunday, June 20th, the parents were in place with their assorted cameras ( video + digital) to record their children being honored as they went from one school level to another.  The College Graduates were the "centerpieces" of the day's recognitions.  Little folks were acknowledges for their promotions from one level to the next. They came up, received a certification, and were delighted at the attention. Officiating were Ms Barbara Cooper, chair of the Commission on Christian Ed and Mrs. Clarestene Stewart,  assistant chair--in the presence of Reverend and Mrs. Robinson.

We had four college grads who spoke of how they went into college "immature" beings and came out "grown-ups" since they had to make so many decisions on their own.  Each thanked the St. Matthew family as well as their biological families for the "teachings" that they were able to lean on and thrive academically as well as socially.

Four graduates were the speakers for the worship service.

Michelene Bryant-Carter's daughter, ( I can't remember her name,), is a hearing- impaired person who graduated with honors from an Institution for the Hearing Impaired.  She "signed" (sign-language) the ritual for us.

Selene Tates' daughter, Shyniece, graduated with honors from NCCU and really impressed me.  She commuted daily to the campus, had a little daugher at home, majored in science and graduated with honors. ( I graduated with a science degree---not an "A" average like Shyniece), Biology and chemistry are HARD majors. I was so proud of her.  She met the challenges and overcame them with God's help she told us.  She plans to attend graduate school.

Jasmine Simmons, granddaughter of Paulette Simmons, graduated  with honors from UNCG with a major in English. While there she pledged Delta Sigma Theta, Inc and participated in many community activities. She spoke of especially helping a homeless man who was always near the campus. I'm not sure of her next move.

Anthony Knox, Jr, graduated from Columbia ( University) College in New York City. He was a BMOC in that he played football. He too was involved in many community activities and pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, Zeta Psi chapter. This summer he and his line attended their first Omega Conclave. His dad is now the National Vice President--and his name was put into the nomination by Tony, Jr.  Wow!  Tony has a sister who is a professional actress/singer. She came up and sang, "The Wind Beneath My Wings," as a special request of her brother.  Antoinette is a fantastic singer.  Her brother noted that she has always been the wind beneath his wings. For the four years he was at Columbia, he tried to attend church each Sunday---WALKING from 116 and Broadway across a park all the way over to 116 Street and Seventh Avenue.(about 2 miles) ( How do I know: I also attended that church for a special service---and he said so.) The Knox family is to be admired. They are very supportive of each other.  Mother, Angela, was head of the Quettes at the conclave and it's said that she did a fantastic job. Tony is going to graduate school and I don't know if he has selected one yet,

These speakers replaced the "sermon" and each had his own "sermonette' to inspire all of the young people who were in attendance.  I forgot the mention that each person who graduated or was promoted came up in the cap and gown.

This was another good idea of our ever-thinking pastor.

We pray God's blessing on each of our children. May they continue to live in "the light".
