DRUGS UNCOVERED What Parents Need to Know! Held on Tuesday, July 20 ~ 6:30 pm
|
On Tuesday evening, July 20th, we attended a 2-hour workshop called, "Drugs Uncovered". The Fellowship Hall was setup so that we could examine a typical teenager's bedroom which had lots of posters and drug "stuff"----unfamiliar to the average eye. Our assignment was to examine the room for drug-related materials/things. I could connect very little. I did recognize a pipe for smoking weed. Are you familiar with drug "jargon"? This presentation was an eye-opener for me. Every person who is raising children should have been there to learn more about stuff that surrounds us, and even may be brought into our home. By the way, almost everything in that room was drug-related and people like me didn't know it. There are many containers where drugs may be hidden. For example, a container for potato chips had a false bottom. Many of the ordinary around-the-house items had false bottoms---all places to hid stuff from parents.
The workshop began with an exam about drugs and things. We each had a device to click our answers. A graph showed up on the screen of a bar graph of our answers. At the end, after the lecture, we took the same test---now we knew the answers. Did you know that 12 is the average age that children begin with drugs? Is there a 12 year old in your house? Peer-pressure is so powerful even the most timid children may have been involved in drugs at one time. We're told that there is a need to know what our children are "thinking"--we need to know their friends--and we need to remind them of our expectations of them.
The same workshop is available for children. You know Gina Dean is on the case. At my age, I knew nothing. You maybe in my boat. You know that your children won't tell you......snoop around for yourself.
We thank the group that sponsors such a workshop. May the quality of life for some of our children be improved.
